Chapters 14-15: Reproduction and Variation Flashcards
What is asexual reproduction?
A type of reproduction involving only 1 parent, creating genetically identical offspring (however they may appear different due to environmental variation). There is no fusion of gametes and the only type of cell division involved is mitosis
What is binary fission?
When a bacteria reproduces asexually by splitting in two
What is vegetative reproduction?
Any asexual reproduction without forming seeds or spores
What is sexual reproduction?
A type of reproduction involving 2 parents, creating offspring with DNA from both parents. The male gamete and the female gamete fuse and fertilisation occurs
What are the gametes in plants?
Pollen and ova
Why do animals that do not care for their young need to produce more ova?
To increase the number of their offspring that reach sexual maturity
What is selective breeding?
A process where humans choose animals to breed together so that their offspring have more desirable characteristics
Why do non-identical twins form?
A woman releases 2 eggs during ovulation which are fertilised by 2 different sperm and develop simultaneously in the uterus
Why do identical twins form?
One fertilised egg splits into 2 cells, which each develop into identical fetuses
