Chapters 13 & 14: Standardized Testing & Interpretation Flashcards
standardized test
administered, scored, and interpreted in predetermined manner
norm-referenced
student performance is interpreted relative to others
criterion-referenced
student performance is interpreted according to how much of a defined assessment domain has been mastered
mean
arithmetic average of scores
median
midpoint in a set of scores when scores are ranked from lowest to highest
stanine
a scale score based on the division of test scores into nine units of one-half standard deviation distances
percentile
an interpretative scoring system based on the percent of students in the norm group who answer the item correctly
normal curve equivalent
a scale score representing a raw score’s relative position in a distribution of scores assumed to be normally distributed
standard deviation
a stats index revealing the degree to which the scores in a group of scores are spread out from the group’s mean score; a measure of variability
standard error of measurement
an estimate of the consistency of an individual’s test performance(s) represented by an index of how likely it is that another test performance would yield a comparable score
p value
An indicator of the item’s difficulty
scales score
converted raw scores that employ a new, arbitrarily chosen scale to represent a student’s performance.
item response theory
a scale-score approach to reporting a student’s test performances takes into consideration item difficulty, the guessability of items, etc.
grade equivalent score
indicator or a student’s test performance base on grade levels and months of a school year.
item discrimination
numerical indicator of the proportion of high total test takers to low-total test takers
