What is a Republic?
A government where citizens rule indirectly and make decisions though elected representatives
What is a democracy?
A government where people hold the power either by acting directly or through their elected representatives.
What is American exceptionalism?
The view that the US is unique by a set of ideas which are equality, self rule, and limited government
What is Pluralist theory?
People can influence government through interest groups. Example: Fighting climate change or Abortions
What is Elite theory?
Power rests in the hands of smaller groups that are wealthy and powerful. Usually Richest Americans
What is Bureaucratic theory?
The millions of men and women that carry out day to day operations of modern government. Those who establish policy.
What is Social movement theory?
People are most influential when they come together to organize and protest regardless of who is in control in government.
What is the Nonpartisan election
Candidates run for election without any party affiliation
Rational choice theory
A political behavior that views people as decisive. They know their political interests and seek to set on them
Negative liberty
Freedom from constraints - no government help as its society’s responsibility
positive liberty
The ability to pursue ones goals w/ resources - government providing healthcare, education, food and more.
Referendum
An election where individuals directly vote on a specific issue
Sunshine laws
laws the let citizens watch policy makers in action. Allows access to records and recordings.
Equality of opportunity
the idea that every American has the same opportunity to influence politics and achieve economic success.
Equality of outcome
Americans should have the around the same economic circumstances.

Representatives follow the voters wishes

Do what they feel is best for the voters regardless of their opinion
Townshend Acts
Townshend Acts initiated taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea - decision was made by British government as American colonies had no representation
Stamp Act
British government imposed a direct tax on all printed material in the American colonies.
Boston Tea Party
protest in which American colonists threw chests of tea into Boston Harbor to go against both a tax on tea and the perceived monopoly of the East India Company.
