Legitimate Power
power from a position and duties in an organization i.e. teacher, boss
Referant power
power through persuasion- Hitler’s speeches
Rewards
you give something to someone else (donors)
Expertise
power because of skills and knowledge i.e. doctor
Coercion
power obtained by force and punishment i.e. bullying
Traditional authority
authority that comes from being someone’s elder or senior i.e. parents, aunts/uncles, pastors.
Formal authority
authority obtained through a formal position i.e. police, the POTUS, your boss
Forms of Legitimacy
Mandate of Heaven, Divine Right of Kings, Social Contract
Mandate of Heaven (China)
Legitimacy was based on circumstances such as natural disasters- rule is legitimate if good things are happening and illegitimate if bad things keep happening

Divine Right of Kings (Europe)
God gave the king the right to rule. If God wants someone to be king, he will make them be king. If he doesn’t want them to be king, he will take that position away from them.
Social Contract (US/Today)
Legitimacy is based on what people say. You only have power because the people allow you to have power and it can be taken away from you if you do a poor job.
3 Purposes of Government
Order, Protection, the Public Good
Order
provides structure to society
Protection
people are protected from criminals and foreign threats (the police and the military)
Public good/Private good
Does things for the general good of the people i.e. national parks, public education, social security, or for the good of the individual i.e. your house, your car etc.
Coercion and Revenue
Building blocks of government
One Person ruling
dictatorship
few people ruling
oligarchy- usually the rich and powerful
many people ruling
democracy- everyone gets a vote
What characterizes modern nation states?
territorial integrity (borders), stable population (fewer undocumented immigrants), Code of laws (constitution/local laws), national sovereignty (nation governs itself)
what are Politics/Political activity
anything you do to influence the government
