North America, Australia, The West Indies, Africa and the Mediterranean. As well as a General dept. in 1870.
What was the job of the Colonial Office?
To oversee the colonies in Empire.
True or false: The Colonial Office were responsible for all British territories?
False. Some protectorates and other areas were overseen differently. E.g Egypt and treaty ports in China were under the foreign office.
What happened in 1858 in regards to the management of certain British territory?
A separate India Office was created.

How were the White Settler Colonies administered?
British governors ruled with the support of representative assemblies, appointing ministers who could command a majority.
Who had originally overseen the expansion in India?
The British East India Company.
What happened in 1858 in regards to who controlled India?
After the Indian Mutiny, the EIC handed the control of India over to the British government and the company was dissolved.
What was the Indian Council?
A council of 15 members, with experience of Indian affairs, were appointed to assist the Secretary of State of India and act as an advisory body for Indian affairs.
What did Russia do in the 1870s which caused it to be a threat to the British Empire?
Russia accumulated large areas of territory in central Asia, which brought Russia closer to Afghanistan and this was seen as a threat to the Raj.
What was the Brussels Conference 1876?
Hosted by King Leopold of Belgium it concluded that Africans were incapable of developing the national resources, therefore European intervention was necessary.
