Chapter Two Flashcards
The first step in development of an evidence-based practice project.
Clinical Question
Contains more than one independent or dependent variable. It is difficult for the findings to indicate unequivocally that the hypothesis is support or not supported. In such cases, the reader must infer which relationships are significant in the predicted direction from the findings or discussion section.
Complex hypothesis
In experimental studies, the presumed effect of the independent or experimental variable on the outcome. This variable is not manipulated.
Dependent Variable
The antecedent or the variable that has the presumed effect on the dependent variable. This variable is manipulated by the variable.
Independent Variable
Hypothesis that specifies the expected direction of the relationship between the independent and dependent variable.
Directional Hypothesis
A prediction about the relationship between two or more variables.
Hypothesis
Indicates the existence of a relationship between the variables but does not specify the anticipated direction of the relationship.
Nondirectional Hypothesis
A well-defined set that has certain specified properties.
Population
That which encompasses the aims or objectives the investigator hopes to achieve with the research, not the question to be answered.
Purpose
A statement about the expected relationship between the variables; also known as a scientific hypothesis.
Research Hypothesis
A key preliminary step wherein the foundation for a study is developed from the research problem and results in the research hypothesis.
Research Question
States that there is no relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The statistical hypothesis also is known as the null hypothesis.
Statistical Hypothesis
Variables of proposed study that lend themselves to observation, measurement, and analysis.
Testability
Set of interrelated concepts, definitions, and propositions that present a systematic view of phenomena for the purpose of explaining and making predictions about those phenomena.
Theory
A defined concept.
