Perception
the process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting information
Expectations
Anything found expected and salient based on prior experience.
Self-Concept
the overall idea of who a person thinks he or she is.
Self-Esteem
The judgments and evaluations we make about our self-concept.
Recency Effect
the idea that an audience will remember the information they heard most recently.
Looking-Glass Self
We see ourselves reflected in people’s reactions to us and form a self-concept.
Social Comparison Theory
we describe and evaluate ourselves in terms of how we compare to other people. Social comparisons are based on two
dimensions: superiority/inferiority and similarity/difference (Hargie, 2011).
Culture
Race, gender, sexual orientation, class, ability, nationality, and age all affect our perceptions.
Self-Presentation
the process
of strategically concealing or revealing personal information in order to influence others’ perceptions
Self-fulfilling Prophecy
A thought and action pattern in which a person’s false belief triggers a behavior that
makes the initial false belief actually or seemingly come true
Stereotypes
beliefs that we develop about groups, which we then apply to individuals from that group ex: black people like fried chicken, Asians are bad at driving, etc.
Prejudice
negative feelings or attitudes toward people based on their identity or identities.
Ethnocentrism
our tendency to view our own culture as superior to other cultures.
