Four Themes of ADCs
Reassurance
- The deceased is fine and the living no longer need to worry about them.
Resolution
- The completion of unfinished business.
Reaffirmation
- The continuation of emotional bonds.
Release
- Grief terminates and life resumes, allowing the deceased to move on.
Lucid Dream
- Where the dreamer is AWARE that they are dreaming.
Pathomorphism
The pathologization of states of consciousness that we do not understand.
- Seeing pathology everywhere.
Hallucinations
Perceptions that do not correspond to physical reality.
- Subjectively generated perception.
- Mistaken judgement about such a perception.
Splitting
The idea that after death experiences of those who are mentally healthy are NOT the same as those of people who are mentally ill.
Lumping
The idea that after death experiences are all alike.
Continuing Bonds Approach to Grief Counselling
Two possible levels…
- Mental Representation
- Interactive Connection
Only works if the individual believes that they are really in contact with the deceased.
Mental Representation
Continuing bonds.
- Whereby a connection to the deceased is maintained through reflection of memories of the deceased.
Interactive Connection
Continuing bonds.
- Whereby the deceased person is regarded as a separate being.
Mirror Gazing
- An induced form of ADCs.
- Individual gazes into a tilted mirror and sees the deceased appearing and/or emerging from the mirror.
Hover Hypothesis
In transplant cases, the donor’s psyche remains close to the physical heart.
