Chapter Test Vocabulary Flashcards
What is Loudness?
Loudness is the human perception of how much energy a sound wave carries.
What is a Compression?
A compression is the “large section” of a compressional wave.
What are Beats?
Beats are the difference in Hertz from two sound waves.
What is Diffraction?
Diffraction is the bending of a wave(s) around a barrier.
What are Natural Frequencies?
Natural Frequencies are the frequencies (in Hertz) that an object will vibrate at.
What is Reverberation.
Reverberation is the repetition of echoes of sound.
What is the Hammer?
The Hammer is a small bone in the ear that get vibrations from the Eardrum and passes them on to the Anvil.
What are Brass and Woodwind Instruments?
Brass and Woodwind Instruments are a type of instrument that vibrates when air passes through different chambers.
What is Pitch?
Pitch is how high or low a sound wave is.
What is a Rarefaction?
Rarefaction is the “smaller section of a compressional wave.
What is Sound Speed?
Sound Speed is how fast a sound wave will travel.
What is a Reflection?
A Reflection is when a wave strikes an object or surface and bounces off.
What are Overtones?
Overtones are multiples of the object’s Fundamental Frequency.
What is the Eardrum?
The Eardrum is a small piece of membrane stretched across the ear canal, and looks like a small drum. This piece of membrane vibrates back and forth, and then passes on the vibrations to the Hammer.
What is the Anvil?
The Anvil is a small bone connecting the Hammer and the Stirrup together. This bone collects vibrations from the Hammer, and then passes them onto the Stirrup.
What is an Echo?
An Echo is a reflected sound wave.
What is Amplitude?
Amplitude is how loud a sound wave is.
What is a Frequency?
The Frequency of a wave, is the number of wavelengths passing a given point in 1 second.
What is Music?
Music is a group of sounds deliberately produced to make noise.
What is Sound Quality?
Sound Quality is the quality, or how well the sound sounds.
What is the Cochlea?
The Cochlea is a snail-shaped division of the Ear that interprets sound, and then sends it off in the Auditory Nerve to the Brain.
What is the Stirrup?
The Stirrup is a piece of membrane that connects the Middle Ear (Hammer,Anvil) with the Inner Ear(Cochlea,Auditory Nerve).
What are Percussive Instruments?
Percussive Instruments, are a type of instrument that requires the musician to strike the instrument.
What is the Doppler Effect?
The Doppler Effect is the frequency of a sound wave seems to change because the sound source is moving away from the listener (lower pitch)
What is the Decibel Scale?
The Decibel Scale is a scale that measures sound.
What is Echolocation?
Echolocation is the general method of locating objects by determining the time for an echo to return and the direction from which it returns, as by radar or sonar.
What is Noise?
Noise is unorganized group(s) of sound.
What is Resonance?
Resonance is when an object is made to vibrate at its natural frequencies
What is a Fundamental Frequency?
A Fundamental Frequency is the lowest frequency produced by a vibrating object?
What is the Musical Scale?
The Musical Scale is a series of notes differing in pitch according to a specific scheme (usually within an octave)
What are Stringed Instruments?
Stringed Instruments are a type of instrument that requires the musician to pluck or slide a bow across the strings.
