- Dolly Winthrop visits Silas with the gift of lard cakes and advice. She tells him to go to church and have a break from weaving.
- However, her advice falls on deaf ears as Silas cannot understand her ‘simple Raveloe theology’ and is too absorbed by his own grief to take heed of her advice.
