they make it - Joseph wakes up and Maurice is gone, he finds a note that says he will be back

-went to Montluçon where their sister leaves
- needed winter clothes, shop had none but they could spent night cuz hotel had been requisitioned
-next day went to sister’s house, she was happy to see them but there was a denouncer in her village
- sent them to stay with someone else

- as he left he realised he has changedand he is more than a now 12 year old.
- grown up, got tougher and changed
- had effected him physically and internally
- he no longer played marbles but was engaged in the war and reality
- blamed the germans “ ils ont tué l’enfant que j’etais”
