A

The Red Room is found out to be the deathbed of her uncle Mr Reed, and we learn he wanted Mrs Reed to look after Jane as she does her own children. She mistakes a light to be a ghost, but is refused permission to leave. She passes out unconscious.

A

Jane is comforted by Miss Temple and Helen when Mr Brocklehurst ‘exposes’ her and she observes the change in Helen as she talks to Miss Temple. Jane starts to enjoy her time at Lowood.

A

Jane encounters Rochester for the first time, unknowingly. His horse slipped on ice, and Jane helps him. His identity is later revealed.

We learn alongside Jane that Adele is not the legitimate child of Rochester - she was the result of an affair with a French opera girl, who later cheated on him. Jane hears the laugh again and rescues him from a fire, much to his gratitude.

A

Jane interrogates Grace Poole. Rochester leaves the house to visit a party. Jane hears of Blanche Ingram’s beauty and compares herself.

At the party, which Jane is forced to attend, the upper-class families criticise the role of a governess. She then privately admits her love for Rochester. Blanche is shown to be Mr Rochester’s favourite, yet when Jane attempts to leave the party she is stopped by Rochester.

A

Jane privately decides that Blanche isn’t worth being jealous of, and even whilst acting out a charade of marriage, she sees that Ingram’s actions doesn’t faze him. The fortune teller arrives.

The fortune teller turns out to be Mr Rochester, and although Jane is irritated, she stays with him. He acts melodramatically upon hearing about Mason.

It is revealed that Mason was attacked by Bertha in the middle of the night, and Jane is delegated the responsibility of caring for him. Rochester comes close to confessing to her, but at the last moment talks about Miss Ingram.

Jane learns that her cousin John Reed committed suicide and Mrs Reed had a stroke. She wanted to see her. Mr Rochester tells her to return in a week, and she meets her cousins.

It turned out John Eyre wanted to adopt Jane three years back and give her his fortune. She forgives Mrs Reed regardless. She returns to Thornfield and Rochester berates her for taking long to return.

Rochester starts to refer to Jane as a beauty and as Jane Rochester. He wants to buy her jewels but she refuses. It is revealed that he was using Ingram to make her jealous. Mrs Fairfax disapproves of the match, however.

Jane waits for Rochester to come back as she tells him of a bad dream where she encounters Bertha and her veil is ripped in two, She also dreams that she is carrying an infant.

All seems to be going well on the day on the wedding until someone announces Bertha’s existence. Rochester doesn’t deny this, and it turns out his wife is a lunatic and was being looked after by Grace Poole. Her brother turned out to be Mason.

Jane forgives Mr Rochester. He states that he fell in love with her from the first sight, and talks about how he was tricked by his family into marrying her.

Jane leaves Rochester and wanders around the moors for a while. She comes across a village and begs for food. She asks to come work as a servant, and because of how inferior she is, Hannah refuses to let her in. St John does and Diana and Mary are introduced.

Jane becomes ill, but Hannah is still harsh towards Jane, believing that she is a beggar. Upon finding out Jane is learned, she is treated better. Diana and Mary are revealed to work as waitresses. Jane is promised a job and she admits Jane Elliot isn’t her name.

Jane befriends Diana and Mary, bu does not get on as well with St John. He is cold and formal. She is offered a job as a teacher, and learns a relative left his money for an unknown reason.

St John offers Jane a furnished cottage to live in, and St John and Jane discuss careers. He talks about his need to be a missionary. Jane confirms his and Rosmund’s love.

Jane is serving well as a teacher, and she observes Miss Rosmund is obviously in love with St John, who admits he loves her. He does not think, however, she would make a suitable missionary’s wife.

Jane spends Christmas with Diana and Mary, and Rosmund marries a rich man. St John gives her lessons in Hindustani, and he asks to marry her. She refuses, as they would not be equals and they did not love one another.

Jane still refuses to marry St John as he seems to dislike her, and she wants to be loved. He concludes that Jane didn’t have a part in God’s will. Diana wants her to stay with him in London. She hears Mr Rochester’s voice.

Jane leaves, and after 3 days of travelling, reaches Thornfield. All that is left of Thornfield is blackened ruins, and it is said Bertha Mason caused it. She is revealed to have committed suicide. Rochester became blind and lost an arm.

Jane surprises Rochester and is is overjoyed at the reunion. She tries to make him feel jealous by teasing him about St John, but agrees to marry him.

She marries him in a quiet ceremony, and Mary and John are also overjoyed. She reunites with Adelé, and Diana and Mary approve of the match. St John is calm and kind in his letters, but is close and looking forward too death. Rochester’s sight returns as he sees his son.
