Chapter 1 - #cousinconflict
Jane is struck by her abusive elder cousin John, who escapes punishment but she is forced to go into the Red Room.
Chapter 2 - #redroom
The Red Room is found out to be the deathbed of her uncle Mr Reed, and we learn he wanted Mrs Reed to look after Jane as she does her own children. She mistakes a light to be a ghost, but is refused permission to leave. She passes out unconscious.
Chapter 3 - #illness
Dr Lloyd discusses the reasons of her illness and why she is so miserable. There is a possibility of her going to school. Bessie shows fondness to Jane, whereas Miss Abbot does not.
Chapter 4 - #standingup
Jane has a discussion with Mr Brocklehurst who claims Jane is a deceitful child and it is decided that Jane will go to Lowood. Jane stands up to Mrs Reed.
Chapter 5 - #firstdayatlowood
Jane realises that conditions are poor, especially the food, but meets Helen Burns.
Chapter 6 - #deepchatswithhelen
Jane witnesses Mrs Scrachard continuously abuse Helen. Helen, upon discussion, determines that she should let it go and that life is too short to hold on to passions or grudges.
Chapter 7 - #hypocrisy
Jane is punished by Mr Brocklehurst for what Mrs Reed said to him, and he makes comments on appearance and attire. His hypocrisy is revealed, however, when his family are revealed to lead a lavish lifestyle.
Chapter 8 - #lowoodlookinggood
Jane is comforted by Miss Temple and Helen when Mr Brocklehurst ‘exposes’ her and she observes the change in Helen as she talks to Miss Temple. Jane starts to enjoy her time at Lowood.
Chapter 9 - #helendies
Although the seasons have brightened, Jane makes a new friend and TB takes over the school. Many die, including Helen.
Chapter 10 - #bessievisits
Jane begins to find Lowood boring, as she now works there as a teacher. After Miss Temple leave s, she places an advert in the Yorkshire Herald. Bessie comes to visit her.
Chapter 11 - #newchapter
Jane first meets Mrs Fairfax and learns about Thornfield. She meets Adele, with whom she can converse fluently in French with. When exploring the house, she hears an odd noise which she passes as Grace Poole laughing.
Chapter 12 - #rochesterdown
Jane encounters Rochester for the first time, unknowingly. His horse slipped on ice, and Jane helps him. His identity is later revealed.
Chapter 13 - #firstconversation
Jane is called to converse with Rochester and both are as equally curt with each other. Rochester often insults Jane, but she plays along.
Chapter 14 - #enigmaticconversing
Rochester and Jane converse more in depth, and both mock each other. He does not seem to be impressed with Jane, and it appears that he is conversing out of boredom.
Chapter 15 - #fireasrochesterdown
We learn alongside Jane that Adele is not the legitimate child of Rochester - she was the result of an affair with a French opera girl, who later cheated on him. Jane hears the laugh again and rescues him from a fire, much to his gratitude.
