What are the events of chapter 1?
We meet Mr. Utterson, the lawyer. His friend, Mr Enfield, tells him about an incident that he witnessed as they are out walking. A man trampled over a little girl and wrote a cheque to the family in the name of their friend, Dr Jekyll.
What are the events of chapter 2?
Mr. Utterson is worried that his friend Dr Jekyll is being blackmailed by Mr Hyde. Dr Jekyll has made a will leaving everything to Mr Hyde. He has a nightmare about Mr Hyde and goes to look for him. He is horrified by his appearance when he meets Mr. Hyde.
What are the events of chapter 3?
Mr. Utterson goes to visit Dr Jekyll to find out more information. He finds him at home and in good spirits. However, when Mr. Utterson mentions the name of Mr . Hyde to him, Dr Jekyll begins to become agitated.
What are the events of chapter 4?
Sir Danvers Carew, a respectable gentleman, is witnessed being stuck to death by Mr Hyde. Mr Utterson and the police try to find him. When they arrive at his home, Hyde has gone in a hurry and his rooms are a mess. A green cheque book remains semi-burned in the fireplace.
What are the events of chapter 5?
Mr Utterson goes to visit Dr Jekyll as he is worried that he may be covering for Mr Hyde. He finds Dr Jekyll in a distressed state. He shows Mr Utterson a letter that was sent to him by Mr Hyde, telling him that he has left and won’t return. Mr Utterson shows the letter to another gentleman who remarks how similar Hyde and Jekyll’s handwriting are. Mr Utterson is then worried that Dr Jekyll is involved in the murder in some way.
What are the events of chapter 6?
Mr Utterson decides to visit Dr Lanyon, who is a friend of both Utterson and Jekyll. He is shock and appalled by his appearance when he sees him. Lanyon looks as though he is dying. Utterson tells Lanyon that Jekyll is ill too. Lanyon tells Utterson never to mention Jekyll’s name to him again. A week later Lanyon dies and leaves a letter to Mr Utterson that can only be read until the death or disappearance of Dr Jekyll.
What are the events of chapter 7?
Mr Utterson and Mr Enfield are on their regular Sunday walk. They discuss the fact that Hyde has left. Mr Utterson expresses his worries about Dr Jekyll to Enfield and suggests that they visit him. Dr Jekyll appears at the window but says that it is better that he talks to them through the window. His face suddenly changes and he retreats from the window. Enfield and Utterson look on in horror.
What are the events of chapter 8?
Poole, Dr Jekyll’s butler, surprises Utterson. Dr Jekyll has locked himself away and Poole is worried about him. He asks Mr Utterson to go with him to Jekyll’s home.They break down the door and find the body of My Hyde dressed in clothes too large for him. It appears that Dr Jekyll has vanished. Utterson finds a letter from Jekyll saying that he has disappeared for somewhere. Mr Utterson asks Poole to keep the letter private in case any wrong doing has occurred.
What are the events of chapter 9?
Dr Lanyon’s narrative. Mr Utterson reads the narrative left to him by Dr Lanyon. Dr Lanyon describes how he received a letter from Jekyll asking him to go to his home and take some potions from a drawer to give to a man. Lanyon gives the potion to the strange man (Mr Hyde) and is horrified when he sees the man transform before him into Dr Jekyll. This is the shock that caused Dr Lanyon to die. Jekyll confesses that Hyde is his alter ego and responsible for the murder of Sir Danvers Carew.
What are the events of chapter 10?
Dr Jekyll’s statement. Dr Jekyll describes how he came to the conclusion that man is two people: they have a good and bad side. He developed a potion in order that he could indulge his wild side. He describes how he changed into Hyde and how, to begin with, the good side of his personality dominated the evil side. However, the evil side began to take over him more and he couldn’t control it anymore. He confesses that he is about to lose his identity as Dr Jekyll completely and that this will be the end of him.
