Chapter 1 - (Story of the Door)
Utterson and Enfield are on a walk, Enfield explains how he witnessed a girl be trampled by a man, known as Mr Hyde. He pays compensation to the girl and goes through a door they both have just walked past to get the check.
Chapter 2 - (Search for Mr Hyde)
Utterson is worried about the situation and looks at Jekyll’s will, and sees it instructs that all of his money should go to Edward Hyde. At the news of this, Utterson visits Lanyon, however he has never heard that name before. Utterson then warns Jekyll about Hyde however he is not in, and his servants explain that they have been instructed to take orders from Hyde in the absence of Jekyll.
Chapter 3 - (Dr Jekyll was quite at ease.)
Utterson mentions the will, and Jekyll begins to make a joke about it, but he turns pale when Utterson tells him that he has been “learning something of young Hyde.” Jekyll explains that the situation with Hyde is exceptional and cannot be solved by talking.
Chapter 4 - (The Carew Murder Case)
Hyde, encounter a polite, aged gentleman; when the gentleman offers Hyde a greeting, Hyde suddenly turns on him with a stick, beating him to death. The police find a letter addressed to Utterson on the dead body, and they consequently summon the lawyer.
Chapter 5 - (Incident of the letter)
Utterson calls on Jekyll, whom he finds in his laboratory looking deathly ill. Jekyll feverishly claims that Hyde has left and that their relationship has ended. He also assures Utterson that the police shall never find the man.
Chapter 6 - (Remarkable incident of Dr Lanyon)
Jekyll returns to his old self, being sociable and renewing his friendship with Lanyon. Jekyll suddenly refuses to see Utterson again, alarming the lawyer. Utterson visits Lanyon and finds him physically changed and clearly disturbed by something terrifying.
Chapter 7 - (Incident at the window)
Utterson passes the door of Jekyll to retrieve Jekyll’s check. Jekyll says that the story of Mr Hyde has ended.
Chapter 8 - Hyde’s suicide
Jekyll’s butler, Poole, begs Utterson to go with him to Jekyll’s laboratory: he fears Jekyll has been murdered. They break the door down and find Hyde’s body on the floor; he has just killed himself by taking poison
Chapter 9 - Dr Lanyon’s narrative
Jekyll’s letter asks Lanyon to leave everything he is doing and go to Jekyll’s house where Poole will be waiting with a locksmith to break into the cabinet. Lanyon is to find a particular drawer, take it back to his own house and wait for a visitor at midnight.
Chapter 10 - Jekyll’s statement
Jekyll reveals what happened and answers all the mysteries.
