Chapter Seven Flashcards
What is happening with Nwoye, how did Ikemefuna have an effect on him, and how does Okonkwo feel about this?
Nwoye undergoes a significant transformation influenced by Ikemefuna. Prior to Ikemefuna’s
arrival, Nwoye is portrayed as a sensitive and somewhat effeminate young boy, which doesn’t
align with Okonkwo’s expectations of masculinity. However, Ikemefuna’s presence has a
profound impact on Nwoye. They develop a close bond, and Ikemefuna becomes a positive
influence on Nwoye’s life. Ikemefuna encourages Nwoye’s confidence, provides companionship,
and introduces him to a world beyond Okonkwo’s stern and demanding personality. Okonkwo,
however, disapproves of the bond between Nwoye and Ikemefuna. Okonkwo values traditional
masculinity and is disappointed by what he perceives as Nwoye’s softer nature. Okonkwo’s rigid
expectations and disapproval contribute to the tension within their father-son relationship.
What happens to Ikemefuna, and what part does Okonkwo play in it? Why does he play his part?
Ikemefuna is eventually killed in a tragic manner, and Okonkwo plays a significant role in this
event. During the annual ceremony in honor of the earth goddess, the village elders decide that
Ikemefuna must be sacrificed to atone for the killing of a Umuofia daughter in Mbaino. The
Oracle declares that Ikemefuna must be taken to the outskirts of the village and killed.
Okonkwo, despite feeling a connection with Ikemefuna and considering him as part of the
family, participates in the procession to take Ikemefuna to his fate. Okonkwo’s role in the
sacrifice reflects his desire to appear strong and unyielding, adhering to the expectations of
Umuofia’s society. He fears being perceived as weak, especially after witnessing how his father,
Unoka, was considered unsuccessful and effeminate. Okonkwo’s participation in the death of
Ikemefuna is a tragic manifestation of his inner turmoil and the harsh customs of the
community.
