Chapter p Flashcards
How do you determine if something is independent?
For events to be independent P(S and T) = P(S) x P(T)
Something is independent if knowing A has occurred doesn’t change the probability of B occurring
How do you determine P(A if B)?
P (A and B) / P(B)
How do you determine P(B if A)?
P (B and A) / P(A)
How do you find P(not B)?
You take 1 minus the P(B)
How do you determine if two events are disjoint / mutually exclusive?
If the two events can occur at the same time, they are NOT disjoint or mutually exclusive.
If A and B are independent events, what is P(A if B)
Simply P(A)
Since B cannot happen at the same time as A
How do you determine the P (A and B) if A and B are independent events?
Multiply them together.
How to do you determine the P(B) in a two-way table?
Sum up the values in the B row.
How do you determine P(A and B) in a two way table?
Find the cell that satisfies A and B and use that value
If A and B are disjoint, what is P(A or B)?
P(A) + P(B)
If A and B are not disjoint what is P(A or B)?
P(A) + P(B) minus P(A and B)
