Structure
an object’s shape or form
Function
the action an object performs or the role it plays
Interaction
something that occurs when two or more things work together or affect one another
System
a group of interdependent parts that work together to perform a function or produce a result.
Cell
basic unit of structure and function in a living thing
Tissue
a group of similar cells that perform the same function e.g. muscle tissue, connective tissue
Organ
a structure that is made up of different tissues e.g. heart (cardiac, connective, nervous tissue)
Organ System
a group of organs that work together to carry out a major function that is important to the survival of the organism e.g. digestive system (mouth, stomach, liver, small intestine)
Musculoskeletal System
organ system that supports body, protects internal organs, produces movement
Circulatory System
organ system that transports nutrients, wastes, and fights infection
Respiratory System
organ system that brings in oxygen to cells, removes carbon dioxide
Digestive System
organ system that breaks down food, absorbs nutrients
Excretory System
organ system that removes metabolic waste products from body
Nervous System
organ system that controls the body’s responses to changes inside and outside the body.
Endocrine System
organ system that controls development and use of energy
