Chapter One Vocab Flashcards
Individual
Objects described by a set of data, people animals or things
Variable
Any characteristic of an individual, different values for different individuals
Categorical
Places an individual into one of several groups
Quantitive
Takes numerical values for which it makes sense to find an average
Distribution
Tells what values a variable takes and how often it takes these values
Marginal distribution
The marginal distribution of one of the categorical variables in a two way table of counts is the distribution of values of that variable among all individuals described by the table
Conditional distribution
Describes the values of One variable among individuals who have a specific value of another variable. There is a separate one for each value of the other variable
Association
Occurs between two variables if specific values of one variable tend to occur in common with specific values of the other
SOCS
SHAPE
OUTLIERS
CENTER
SPREAD
Skewed left
The data is more centered on the right but has a tail to the left
Skewed right
The data is more centered to the left but has a tail towards the right
Symmetric
If the left and the right are mirror images of each other
Mean
All the numbers added up and divided by the total amount of numbers to find the average
Median
The middle number of the data, helps with skewed to eliminate outliers
IQR
Inner quartile range, Q3-Q1
