A deliberate lifestyle choice characterized by personal responsibility and optimal enhancement of physical, mental, and spiritual health.
Wellness
Any planned combination of educational, political, regulatory, and organizational supports for actions and conditions of living conducive to the health of individuals, groups, or communities.
Health Promotion
The state of being hale, sound, or whole, in body, mind, or soul, especially the state of being free from physical disease or pain. However, the contemporary health dictionary states “not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Physical Health
Emotional and mental states– feelings and thoughts. Awareness and acceptance of a wide range of feelings in oneself and others, as well as the ability to express emotions, to function independently, and to cope with the challenges of daily stressors.
Psychological Health
Ability to identify one’s basic purpose in life; learn how to experience love, joy, peace, and fulfillment; and help themselves and others achieve their full potential.
Spiritual Health
The ability to interact effectively with other people and the social environment, to develop satisfying interpersonal relationships, and fulfill social roles. Participating in and contributing to your community, living in harmony l with fellow human beings, developing positive interdependent relationships, and practicing healthy sexual behaviors.
Social Health
The ability to think and learn from life experience, your openness to new ideas, and your capacity to question and evaluate information.
Intellectual Health
Refers to the impact your world has on your well-being. Protecting yourself from dangers in the air, water, and soil, and in products you use.
Environmental Health
Information and support offered to help healthy people identify their health risks, reduce stressors, prevent potential medical problems, and enhance their well-being.
Prevention
Measures that an individual can take when participating in risky behavior to prevent injury or unwanted risks.
Protection
A behavior or attitude that a particular group expects, values, and enforces.
Social Norm
The beliefs, values, attitudes, knowledge, and perceptions that influence our behavior.
Predisposing Factors
The skills, resources, and physical and mental capabilities that shape our behavior.
Enabling Factors
Rewards, encouragement, and recognition that influence our behavior in the short run.
Reinforcing Factors
A model of behavioral change that focuses on the individual’s attitudes and beliefs.
