Physiology
science of the functions of living organisms
Organelle
specialized structures in a cell that perform specific metabolic functions
Cell
basic unit of living organisms
Tissue
group of similar cells specialized for a specific function
Organ
part of the body formed with two or more tissues
Organ system
group of organs that work together to perform a function
Organism
a living individual
Metabolism
the total of chemical reactions in the body
Homeostasis
stable internal enviornment of the body
Negative-feedback mechanisms

Control center
operational center for a group of activities
Effector

Positive-feedback mechanism
feedback that tends to cause a variable to change in the same direction as the initial change
Anatomical position
body position with the arms down at the sides and legs straight
Superior
head or upper body
Inferior
near the tail end of the body
Anterior
the front of the organ, organism or part
Sagittal plane

Transverse plane
plane that divides the body into the superior and inferior parts
Frontal Plane
plane that divides the body into posterior and anterior parts
Oblique plane
slanting plane of the body
