chapter one the atmosphere Flashcards
if gas is put in a closed container, it will expand and fill the container entirely and total pressure will drop (true/false)
True
If you put the gas in a small container and put it into a lager container, the volume is greater, the gas expands and the pressure will drop
The air can hold more water vapor at a lower temperature. (true/false)
False, water vapor will not exist in colder temperatures because the molecules have less open space between them.
The amount of water vapor the air can hold has a positive relationship with temperature. As temperature decreases, the amount of water vapor the air can hold decrease.
What is the composition of dry air?
nitrogen 78 %
oxygen 21%
other gases Mostly Argon 1%
What are the four atmospheric layers?
troposphere, stratosphere, ionosphere and exophere
What is the standard temperature lapse rate?
2 degrees per 1,000 feet up to 36,000 feet. Above this altitude, the temperature remains fairly constant to about 80,000 feet.
What is the standard pressure in pounds per square inch (psi) at sea level on a standard day?
14.7 psi, 29.99inches of mercury or 1013.25 millibars
Does atmospheric pressure decrease with an increase in altitude? does it decrease proportionally?
Yes, the atmospheric pressure decreases with and increase in altitude. The higher the altitude, the less air that is pushing down on you.
Define and describe pressure altitude.
What is it used for?
Pressure altitude is the height above the standard datum plate (SDP) which is the theoretical level where the weight of the atmosphere is 29.92 in Hg (1013.2 mb) as measured by the barometer.
It is used as a basis to determine aircraft performance and for assigning flight level.
Define and describe density altitude. What effect does density altitude have on aircraft performance?
Density altitude is pressure corrected for nonstandard temperature. As the density of the air increases, (lower density altitude), aircraft performance increases; conversely, as air density decreases (higher density altitude), aircraft performance decreases.
What three factors change air density?
What is not accounted for when calculating aircraft performance?
Altitude, temperature, and humidity.
humidity is not taken into consideration when calculating aircraft performance
What is definition of temperature? What happens when the temperature rises or falls
The speed of the movement of molecules. The hotter the temperature the faster the molecules move, The colder the temperature is, the molecules begin to condense moving slower and become more restricted.
Where does most of the earths weather occur, in what two layers?
start in troposphere and stratosphere
What happens to temperature in the troposphere?
as altitude increases temperature decreases
What happens to temperature in the stratosphere?
as altitude increases temperature stays the same or slightly increases
What is between the troposphere and stratosphere? What occurs there?
the tropopause contains ozone
