CHAPTER ONE Flashcards
The eight characteristics of living organisms
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition, Control
The five kingdoms
Animals, Plants, Fungi, Prokaryote and Protoctists
Nutrition
The obtaining of food to provide energy and substances needed for growth, development and repair.
Respiration
chemical reactions that release energy in cells
Movement
an action caused by an organism that caused it to change its’ position or place
Growth
the permanent increase in size and dry mass
Excretion
the release of toxic, waste substances as a result of metabolism
Reproduction
the formation of new individuals of the same organism
Sensitivity
the detection and response to internal and external stimuli
The Binomial System or the Linnaean System
an internationally used system that classifies the organism with a scientific name that consists of their genus name and their species name (i.e homo sapiens, panthera leo)
Methods to classify organisms
morphology, anatomy, sequences of amino acids, sequences of bases
cells present in all living organisms
cell membrane, cytoplasm, DNA, ribosomes
vertebrates
animals with a backbone or vertebral column
invertebrates
animals without a backbone or vertebral column
types of vertebrates
mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians
