Chapter One Flashcards
“They were both in white, and their dresses were rippling and fluttering”
Describing Daisy & Jordan when Nick first comes to Daisy’s house. They sound magical and there is a sense of movement. Makes them sound like butterflies- delicate and beautiful.
“there was a boom as Tom Buchanan shut the rear windows” and “the two young women ballooned slowly to the floor”
Tom brings Nick back to reality.
“You must know Gatsby”
First time Gatsby is mentioned- by Jordan. He is famous and everyone is heard of him, so much so that it is assumed that everyone knows him.
“Tom’s got some woman in New York”
Jordan tells Nick this. The facade of them being happy and perfect is shattered.
“I hope she’ll be a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool”
Shows Daisy’s character. She is a product of her social environment and therefore does not value intelligence in woman. Daisy pretends to be a fool, but she is not and this is why she’s sad all the time. If the girl is a fool, she’ll have a lot more fun
“Sad and lovely”, “charming little laugh” – “I’m pretty cynical about everything”
Our initial impressions of hope and joy are juxtaposed by her views of the society she lives in.
“a single green light”
Nick sees Gatsby for the first time. He is reaching towards the green light which represents his hope of reuniting with Daisy.
