Chapter One Flashcards
Principle of Complementarity
Structure dictates function.. function dictates form
Ex. bones can support and protect organs because they contain hard mineral deposits
Integumentary System
- Forms the external body covering known as our skin and protects deeper tissues from injury
- “Integument” means “to cover”
The Skeletal System
Protects and supports body organs
Provides the framework for muscles
The Muscular System
- Composed of muscles and tendons
- Allows movement, manipulation of environment and facial expression
- Produces heat
The Nervous System
Composed of brain, spinal cord and peripheral spinal nerves
Responds to external stimuli through internal responses
The Cardiovascular System
Composed of heart and blood vessels
Sends blood throughout the body
The Lymphatic System
Composed of Lymph nodes, vessels, trunks and ducts
Picks up leaked fluids from blood vessels and tissues
Cleanses fluid and returns it to the blood stream
Houses white blood cells (immunity)
The Respiratory System
Composed of nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs
Supplies blood with oxygen and removed carbon dioxide
The Digestive System
The dis-assembly system where food is broken down into smaller particles
The Urinary System
Eliminates waste from body
Regulates water, electrolytes, pH, and water/salt balance in the body
Male Reproductive System
Produces gametes (sperm) and testosterone
Female Reproductive System
Production of gametes (eggs)
Production of estrogen and other hormones
