WORLDVIEW
Basic set of beliefs that guide action
research approaches
procedures for research than span the steps from broad assumptions to detailed methods of data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
research methods
within a particular design the researcher gathers data, analyzes it, and makes and interpretation of its meaning.
research design
the ways of conducting research within a broad methodology.
Postpositivist Worldview
represent the traditional forms of research, but specifically one cannot he certain about claims of knowledge. Causes determine outcomes or effects.
Constructivist Worldview
a philosophical position used in qualitative research. Individuals seek understanding of the world in which they live and work.
Transformative Worldview
research inquiry needs to be intertwined with politics and a political change agenda to confront social oppression at whatever level it occurs.
Pragmatic worldview
arises out of the actions, situations, and consequences rather than antecedent conditions.
experimental research
seeks to determine if a specific treatment influences an outcome.
survey research
provides a quantitative or numeric description of populations trends, attitudes, or opinions by studying a sample of that population.
descriptive method
in qualitative research, an approach to analysis where the researcher stays close to the data, uses limited frameworks and interpretation for explaining the data and catalogues the information into themes.
narrative research
a design of inquiry from the humanities in which the researcher studies the lives of individuals and one or more participants to provide stories about their lives.
phenomenological research
a design of inquiry coming from philosophy and psychology in which the researcher describes the lived experiences of individuals about the phenomenon as described by the participants.
grounded theory
a design of inquiry from sociology in which the researcher derives a general, abstract theory of a process, action, or interaction grounded in the views of participants.
ethnography
a design of inquiry coming from anthropology and sociology. the research studies the shared patterns of behaviors, language, and actions of an intact cultural group in a natural setting over a prolonged period of time.
