Chapter Notes Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system?
Support, protect, movement, mineral storage and hematopoesis
Articulations are also called?
Joints
What are the two functions of articulations??
Movement and the holding of bones together
What are the 3 types of articulations?
- Synarthrosis: no movement
- Amphiarthrosis: Slight movement
- Diarthrosis: free movement
What are the 4 types of bones? Examples?
Long bone: Femur and humerus
Short bone: Metacarpals
Flat bones: Skull and sternum
Irregular bones: Vertebrae
What are the two divisions of the skeleton and what are they?
Axial skeleton: everything in the middle
Appendicular skeleton: Extremities
What are the 3 main functions of the muscular system?
Motion
Maintenance and posture
Production of heat
What is the skeletal muscle structure?
- Epimysium: makes entire graps
- Perimysium:The middle that covers small strands of muscle fibers
- Endomysium:The innermost fascia
Nerve and blood supply
Because of the physical demands placed on the skeletal muscles, they need a constant supply of oxygen and nutrition. They are well supplied with blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrition to the area and remove the waste products of metabolism
Are skeletal muscles voluntary or involuntary?
Skeletal muscles are voluntary
Muscle tone is necessary for?
Good posture but does not provide movement
Muscle cells are governed by the “all or none law” which is?
When a muscle cell is adequately stimulated or shocked it will contract completely
What is flexion?
Body part going back
What is extension?
Body part going forward
What does abduction mean?
Away from midline of body
