Chapter I Flashcards
What is Sustainability?
The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Green Building
Is the practice of creating structures and processes that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient throughout the lifecycle of a building. That lifecycle respectfully analyses and integrates the site selection through design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and deconstruction. The practice expands and complements the classical building design concerns of Economy, utility, durability and comfort
Why high-performance buildings are built?
- minimize resource consumption.
- reduce lifecycle costs.
- maximize health and productivity for occupants.
- improve environmental performance
Built environment
Represents all the human made surroundings. Scale from personal shelters to cities. Represents 67% GHGs. Includes system transportation
Whole Building Design
Is an integrative design that included and integrative team. Is the approach that will facilitate sustainable design for the future
- ventilation
- materials
- lighting and power
- orientation and massing
- envelope
- site and water
- heating and cooling
Integrative Design Process
- Pre-Design
- Design
- Construction Plans
- Bidding process
- Construction
- Commission the building
- Occupancy and recommissioning
- Building end of life reuse or demolition/recycle
Integrative Process - Predesign phase
- Life cycle approach
- Project vision
- Green goals
- Set priorities - green goals
- Select project team
- Research green technologies and strategies
- Assign small task groups
- Green building budget items
- Review applicable laws and standards
- Zoning and local codes
- ICC
- IgCC
- ADA
ADA
Americans with Disabilities Act
IgCC
International Green Construction Code
Stablishes a baseline regulation for new and existing buildings related to energy conservation, water efficiency, buiding owner responsabilities, site impacts, building waste, and materieals
ICC
International Code Council
Memebership association dedicated to building safety, and fire prevention. Includes building, plimbing, mechanical and fire codes.
Integrative Process - Design phase
- Develop a project budget that covers GB measures
- Test and selectb tech and strategies’
- Check costs
- Finalize design decisions
LCC
Life Cycle Cost
Is the sum of all recurring and one-time costs over the life span or a specified period of a good, service, structure, or system
Includes: purchase price, installation, operation, maintenance and upgrade costs
LCA
Life Cycle Analisis
Is the investigation and valuation of the environmental impacts of a given product or service caused or necessitated by its existence
Define USGBC
U.S. Green Building Council
Is a 501(c)(3) non profit community of leaders working to make green buildings available to eveyone within a generation.
When USGBC was founded?
1992
USGBCI Mission
To transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built, and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsable, healthy, and prosperous environment ghat improves the quality of life.
How the USGBC accomplished its mission?
- Advocacy > provides tools, strategies and resources for policy makers and leaders on local, state and national levels
- Resources > provides tools and resources for project teams
- Education
- Committess, chaoters and conferences
USGBC Principles
- Promoting the tripple bottom line
- Establishing leadership
- Creating and restoring harmony between humans and natures
- Maintaining integrity by using technical and scientific data to help guide decision making
- Ensure inclusiveness by using a democratic process and giving everyone the opportunity to be heard
- Exhibit transparency by having open standards
LEED Definition
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
Is a leading-edge system for certifying high-performance buildings and sustainable neighborhoods
Why LEED was created?
- Define “green building” by establishing a common standard of measurement
- Promote integrative, whole-building design practices
- Recognize environmental leadership in the building industry
- Stimulate green competition
- Raise consumer awareness of green building benefits
- Transform the building market
LEED Certification Benefits
- saves money over the life cycle of the building
- State local government incentives
- Facilitates integrative process
- Third party validation achievement
- Cost saving on utilities
- Increased value
- Good PR
