Chapter Four Flashcards
Hydroforming
Using high pressured water to shape steel to desired shape
Body over frame construction
Frame is foundation. All major parts are attached to frame.
Unibody
No separate frame. All major parts are welded together. Most modern cars
What is Combustion
Burning of air/ fuel mixture
What is the biggest part of the engine
Cylinder block or engine block
Where is the cylinder head found
On top of the cylinder block
What does a cylinder head do
Seal the top of the cylinders
What is the combustion chamber
Area in which the air/fuel mixture is compressed and burned. Most of which is in cylinder head
What are ports
Passageways through the cylinder head where the air fuel mixture enters and burned gasses exit the cylinder.
What are cylinder heads made of
Cast iron or aluminum
Where are pistons located
Inside the cylinders
What connects the pistons to the crankshaft
Connecting rods
What happens to the crankshaft when the piston comes down on the power stroke
The connecting rod transfers the force to crankshaft causing it to rotate
Where is the end of the crankshaft connected
The transmission
What is a valve train
Series of parts used to open and close intake and exhaust ports
