Chapter Eleven, Lesson One: Temperature, Thermal Energy, and Heat Flashcards
temperature
Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold something is compared to a reference point. Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object.
Fahrenheit scale
The United States uses the Fahrenheit scale to measure temperature.
Celsius scale
Most countries use the Celsius scale to measure temperature.
Kelvin scale
Many scientists use the Kelvin scale. A temperature change of 1 K is the same temperature change as 1°C.
absolute zero
Zero kelvins, or absolute zero, is the lowest temperature possible. At absolute zero, particles have no kinetic energy. Zero K is equal to -273°C.
heat
Heat is the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object.
