Chapter 9 Vocabulary Flashcards
Mobility:
The degree to which an articulation is allowed to move before being restricted by surrounding tissues.
Co-contraction
This is defined as the mutual coordination between antagonist muscles in order to maintain a position. A good example would be with flexors and extensors.
Reciprocal inhibition
The reflex inhibition of motor neurons of antagonists when the agonists are contracted.
Tonicity
The elastic tension of living tissues, like muscles and arteries.
Autogenic inhibition
This is an automatic reflex that is caused by stimulation of the Golgi tendon organ. (GTO)
Fascia
These strong connective tissues perform a number of functions. These include developing and isolating the muscles of the body and also providing structural support and protection.
Golgi tendon organ
This is a sensory organ within a tendon that, when it is stimulated, causes an inhibition of that entire muscle. This is used to protect our muscles from exerting too much force.
Maximal Voluntary Contraction
The maximal effort of a muscle or muscle group during a muscular contraction.
Base of Support
The areas of contact between the feet and their supporting surface and the area between the feet.
Static Balance
This is when you maintain your posture and form when you are stationary.
Dynamic Balance
The act of maintaining posture and form while on the move.
Q-angle
The angle that is formed by lines drawn from the anterior superior iliac spine to the central patella to the tibial tubercle. This is used as an estimate for the effective angle at which the quadriceps pull on the patella.
