Chapter 9 - Section 1 Flashcards
Name the causes of Erosion.
Mudflow Gravity running water glaciers waves wind
How does gravity affect materials on a slope?
Gravity causes materials on a slope to lied down
Erosion
The process by which natural forces move weathered rock and soil from one place to another
Sediment
Material moved by erosion
Deposition
Deposition occurs when erosion deposits or lays down sediment.
Gravity
The force that moves rock and other materials downhill.
Mass movement
The process that moves sediment downhill
What processes wear down and build up earth’s surface?
Erosion and deposition
Over time how will erosion and deposition affect a mountain range?
Over millions of years erosion gradually wears away mountains while deposition fills in Valleys with sediment. the land will become flat.
What are the four types of mass movement?
Landslides, mudflows,slump, and creep
What force causes all types of mass movement?
Gravity
What causes landslides?
Landslides are caused when rock and soil slide quickly down a steep slope
What causes mudflows?
An earthquake can trigger mudflows. mudflows often occur after heavy rains in a normally dry area
What causes slump
A mass of rock and soil suddenly slips down the slope. it often occurs when water soaks the bottom of soil that is rich in clay
What causes creep?
Creep is caused from the freezing and thawing of water in cracked layers of rock beneath the soil
