chapter 9: salts Flashcards
what is a salt?
substance formed when the hydrogen of an acid is partially or completely replaced by a metallic ion / ammonium ion
which chlorides are soluble?
all except silver and lead (II)
which sulfates are soluble?
all except calcium, barium, lead (II)
which nitrates are soluble?
all
which carbonates are soluble?
none
which hydroxides are soluble?
none
which iodides are soluble?
all
which bromides are soluble?
all
what other salts are soluble?
ammonium + group 1 salts
when do we use precipitation?
when salt is insoluble.
when do we use excess MOCHA?
when salt is not A1 salt
when do we use titration?
when salt is A1 salt
what is the reaction for precipitation?
soluble (cation) + soluble (anion) -> insoluble salt
what is the reaction for excess MOCHA?
soluble (acid) + insoluble MOC -> soluble salt (non A1 salt)
what is the reaction for titration?
soluble (acid) + soluble (alkali) -> soluble salt (A1 salt)
how to carry out precipitation?
mix 2 aq solutions to precipitate out insoluble salt
(filter the ppt)
how to carry out excess MOCHA?
filter to remove insoluble MOC
-> obtain salt through crystalisation
how to carry out titration?
add acid in burette
add alkali in conical flask
find end point
