what are primary sex characteristics?
gonads, internal sex organs, and external genitalia (present at birth)
what are secondary sex characteristics?
enlarged breasts and widened hips or a beard and deep voice - do not appear until puberty
when does the onset of puberty occur?
when the hypothalamus secrete gonadotropin releasing hormones, creates two gondotropic hormones by anterior pituitary gland
what do gonadotropic hormones do?
The gonadotropic (“gonad-turning”) hormones stimulate the gonads to produce their hormones, which are ultimately responsible for sexual maturation.
what are the two gonadotropic hormones?
follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone
what is follicle stimulating hormone?
The hormone of the anterior pituitary gland that causes development of an ovarian follicle and the maturation of an ovum.
what is the luteinizing hormone?
A hormone of the anterior pituitary gland that causes ovulation and development of the ovarian follicle into a corpus luteum.
what do the ovaries produce?
estrogen
what does estrogen do?
A class of sex hormones that causes maturation of the female genitalia, growth of breast tissue, and development of other physical
what happens when a man is treated with estrogen?
he will grow breasts, facial hair will become finer and softer BUT voice will remain low since the enlargement of larnyx is permanent
What happens when a woman receives a lot of androgen?
will grow a beard and voice becomes lower
