Chapter 9: Mitosis Flashcards
Functions of cell division
Replaces dead cells with new ones, Repairs damaged tissues, Allows organisms to grow by adding more cells to the body
Interphase
the stage between cell divisions, consisting of three sub-phases. During interphase the cell is engaged in metabolic activities
Gzero phase
this phase only occours in cells that do not divide such as nerve cells. these cells are very mature and are very specialized in their function
g-1 phase
every other cell goes directly to this phase, the cell grows in volume and produces RNA and other organelles
g-2 phase
the cell prepares for mitosis by synthesizing spindle fiber proteins.
Prophase
centriole makes spindle fibers the nucleolus dissolves and chromosomes become attached to spindle fibers
