Manual lymph drainage
Abbreviated MLD, gentle rhythmic pressure on the lymphatic system to detoxify and remove waste materials from the body more quickly reduces swelling, and is used before and after surgery
Acupressure
Is massage technique to arrive from Chinese medicine and consist of applying pressure to specific points of the face and body
Vibration
Is the rapid shaking movement in which the esthetician uses the body and shoulders not just a fingertips to create the movement
Friction
Invigorating, rubbing technique requiring pressure on the skin with the fingers or palm while moving them under an underlying structure
Should vibration be used for a long period of time?
Vibration is a highly stimulating movement, but it should be used sparingly and never more than a few seconds on any one spot
When using friction you should?
Pressure is maintained on the skin while the fingers or palms are moved over the underlying structures
What are benefits of a facial massage?
Helps muscle tone and relieves muscle tension and pain
Should facial massage be given for a long period of time?
No massage never be given too long or too deeply
What are some contraindications?
Inflamed acne, do not massage any area that has pustular, breakouts, sunburn, windburn, irritation, severe redness, open lesions, cut, sores, or abrasions
Know your scope of practice
Therapeutic massage such as deep tissue massage and manual lymph drainage should be performed only by license massage therapist who specialize in these areas

Referred to state licensing regulation regarding your scope of practice related to massage services that are legal to perform under your license
Effleurage
Light continuous, stroking movement apply with the fingers or the palms in a slow rhythmic matter
Petrissage
Needing movement that stimulates the underlying tissues performed by lifting, squeezing and pressing the tissue with the light firm pressure
Shiatsu
Is a form of acupressure and is a Japanese technique

Similar to acupressure
Tapotement
Also known as percussion movements, consisting of short, quick, tapping and slapping movements

Should you use your fingertips when giving a facial massage?
Do not use the ends of the fingertips because fingertips cannot control pressure and me scratch the client
