Chapter 9 - Intelligence: Psychological testing Flashcards
Psychological testing usages (5)
Used to assess many areas:
o Traits
(introversion and extroversion)
o Certain conditions
(depression and anxiety)
o Intelligence, aptitude and achievement
(verbal intelligence and reading achievement)
o Attitude and feelings
(how individuals feel about the treatment that they received from their therapists)
o Interests
(the careers and activities that a person is interested in, specific abilities, knowledge or skills such as cognitive ability)
Types of psychological Tests (2)
- Mental Ability Test: intelligence tests, aptitude tests, and achievement tests
- Personality Tests: measure behavioral traits, motives, and interests
Standardisation
A two part test development procedure that first establishes test norms from the test results of the large sample
- Ensuring all participants of the test are under the same circumstances
Norms
Scores established from the test
o All proctors must give same directions and conditions and scores sheets
o Norm group: representative sample
Types of reliability test (4)
test to check reliability of an experiment
- Test-Retest: test produces similar results when given at two points in time
- Alternate Form: two versions of the same test produce similar results
- Internal: different parts of the same test produce similar results
- Interrater or Interjudge: two or more raters or judges who administer and score a test to an individual come to similar conclusions
Reliability
How consistent the results from a test are. The ability of the test when being administered repeatedly
Correlation Coefficient Interpretation
The understanding of the numerical relationship between two variables
Strength of relationship according to coefficient range
high = 0.8 - 1
moderate = 0.4 - 0.6
low = 0 - 0.2
Validity
How relevant the test is designed to measure the content
Criterion of validity:
Concurrent
- Measures the ability of the test to estimate present performance
Criterion of validity:
Predictive
Measures the ability of the test to predict future performance
