CHAPTER 9 HABITATS, ENVIRONMENT AND SURVIVAL Flashcards
Abiotic
Non-living thing (surrounding the environment)
Adaptation
features that appear to equip an organism for survival in a particular habitat
Biotic
Living things, such as organisms, living in an ecosystem that are assisted by abiotic factors such as sunlight
competition
interaction between individuals of the same or different species that use one or more of the same resources in the same ecosystem
( the interaction between members of the same or different species, competing for a common food, shelter or mate)
Geographical area
Location of where an organism lives around the world
(Where an organism inhabits around the world.
Eg: red panda, in Asia
habitat
part of an ecosystem in which an organism lives, feeds and reproduces
[An area (ecosystem) where an organism lives, feeds and reproduces]
Dormancy
A period of time which organisms do not grow due to environmental conditions such as temperature etc
(A period of inactivity in an organisms life cycle, where metabolic activity decrease to conserve energy. This is due to extreme abiotic and biotic factor changes)
Migration
The movement of a spices from one habitat to another due to seasonal change, food scarcity and reproductive reasons, or habitat loss.
Limiting factor
The limits the growth of a population
[An environmental factor(abiotic factor) which acts to control the growth of populations on an ecosystem]
community
biological unit consisting of all the populations living in a specific area at a specific time
(A population of various organisms from several species living in a specific place/area that can share resources and don’t have to interact )
microhabitat
small region within a habitat that may have environmental conditions that differ from those prevailing in the larger habitat
( a specific environment of a habitat in which a particular organism live, feeds and reproduces)
niches
ways of life of organisms in an ecosystem; roles of species in a community
( an organisms role or status in an ecosystem, providing a set of needs to other organisms that it interacts with )
Range
The geographical area that surrounds the habitat of the species around the world
(Other possible areas around the world where an organism can live and obtain its needs)
Niche overlap
When two or more different spices compete for the same energy and space resources to archive the same role.
([the overlap of resources(such as food source) which is required by two different species sharing the same nice.]
(This results in competition for that resources)
Tolerance range
A range of environmental conditions, such as temperature, in which a species can withstand and survive
