Chapter 9 and 10 - Science Test Flashcards
What is an Atom
The smallest unit of an element that retains the properties of the element.
Subatomic
Anything smaller then an atom
Proton
A small particle that is positively charged found in the nucleus of an atom.
Electrons
A tiny negatively charged particle that moves around the outside of the nucleus.
Neutrons
A small particle found in the nucleus that has no charge.
Nucleus
The central core of an atom that contains both protons and neutrons.
Atomic Number
- Every atom of an element has the same number of protons and electrons( The number in the top corner)
How to calculate the number of Neutrons
Atomic weight (rounded ) -Atomic Number
Atomic weight
This is a weighted average so it is not equal to the
mathematical average of the isotopes.
Periodic Table
A table that holds all the elements.
Periods
Horizontal rows of the periodic table.
Groups
The vertical columns on the table.
Chemical Symbol
Just below the atomic number is one, two, or three letters depending
on the element.
These stand for the particular element and are internationally
accepted.
Fusion
Fusion is the process through which new elements are created.
Reactivity
The ease and speed with which an element reacts with or
combines with other elements or compounds.
