Chapter 9: Algebra: Linear Function Flashcards
Term
Each number in the list of numbers of a sequence.
Sequence
An ordered list of numbers
Arithmetic sequence
A sequence in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is the same (add or subtract the same amount.)
Common difference
The amount that the terms are added/subtracted in an arithmetic sequence.
Geometric sequence
A sequence with the ratio between two consecutive terms constant.
Constant ratio
A fixed value
Domain
The set of input values for a function
Range
The set of output values for a function
Function table
A table used to organize input, function rule, and output values
Linear function
A relationship between two variables whose graph in the coordinate plane is a straight line.
Slope
A measure of the steepness of a line.
Rise
The change in the vertical distance
Run
The change in the horizontal distance
Subscripts
A symbolic name for an array of variables whose elements are identified.
Direct variation
The ratio of the value of the dependent variable to the value of the independent variables constant.
Constant of variation
The nonzero ratio between two variables in a direct variation or the nonzero product of two variables in an inverse variation.
Slope-intercept
A general algebraic representation of a linear function.
Y-intercept
The point at which a curve intersects an axis is known as an Intercept.
Systems of equations
A set of two or more equations involving the same variables or unknowns
Scatterplot
A type of graph that plots point to show a relationship between two variables.
Line of best fit
A line on a graph showing the general direction that a group of points seem to be heading.
Correlation
Describes the strength of a relationship between two variables.
