Intercultural communication
Communication between people of different cultural backgrounds. Interactants do not necessarily share the same ground rules.
Intracultural communication
Communication among people of the same cultural background. They share the same ground rules about encoding and decoding.

What 3 components of mindfulness affect intercultural effectiveness?
Motivational Factors- specific needs, attraction, social bonds, self-conceptions, openness to new info
Knowledge Factors- expectations, shared networks, knowledge of more than one perspective, alternative interpretations and of similarities & differences
Skill Factors- ability to empathize, tolerate ambiguity, adapt communication, create new categories, accommodate behavior

Code Frame Switching
Switching back and forth from one cultural meaning system to the other when accessing one language or another
Foreign language effect
A temporary decline in the thinking ability of people who are using a foreign language in which they at least proficient than their native tongue
Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis
The proposition that speakers of different languages think differently, and that they do so because of the differences in their languages.
Emotion
Transient, neurophysiological reactions to events that have consequences for our welfare, and require an immediate behavioral response.
What is the difference between emotions and moods?
Emotions last only a few seconds or minutes, moods last for hours or days. They prepare us for action and tell is something about our relationships.
