Thin layer of tissue that attaches the nail plate and bed
Bed epithelium
Area where nail plate cells are formed; contains nerves, lymph and blood vessels to nourish matrix cells. Extends from under the nail fold at base of the nail plate

Visible part of matrix that extends from underneath the living skin; white half moon at base of nail
Lunula
Dead colorless tissue attached natural nail plate
Nail cuticle
The living skin at the base of the natural nail plate that covers matrix. Living tissue that grows up to the nail plate
Eponychium
Dead tissue adheres to nail plate
Cuticle
Slightly thickened layer of skin that lies between the fingertip and free edge of he natural nail plate
Hyponychium
Tough band of fibrous tissue that connects bones or holds an organ in place. Located at base of matrix and around wedges if nail bed
Ligament
Folds of normal skin that surround nail plate. Golds form grooves.
