Chapter 9 Flashcards
It is a collection of facts such as numbers, words, measurement, observation, symbols or even just a description of things
Data
It is a raw fact that processes into information
Data
What are the 7 key characteristics of Data?
- Accurate
- Complete
- Timely
- Consistent
- Accessible
- Relevant
- Concise
Why managing data is important?
a. Less waste of money
b. Gaining competitive advantage
c. Better functioning organization
What are the 5 difficulties in managing data?
- The amount of data increases exponentially with time
- Data are scattered throughout organization
- Data come from multiple sources
- Data security, quality and integrity are critical yet easily jeopardized
- New sources of data such as blogs, podcasts, video casts and RFID tags and otherwise sensors are constantly being developed.
It represent the smallest unit of data a computer can process
Bit
It means that bit can consist only of a 0 or a 1.
Binary
Group of 8 bits represent a single character.
Byte
It can be a letter, number or a symbol
Byte
A logical grouping of character into a word, a small group of words, or an identification number.
Field
A logical grouping of related fields
Record
A group of related records
File
A collection of application programs tat perform services for the end-users such as the production of reports
File-based approach
They are data dependent
Application programs
It is a way which data is stores within a computer.
Database Approach
It is organized into various chart that are accessed by a variety of computer applications from different location
Database approach
Data shares by different group of users and application programs Provision of multiple interfaces
Centralization of information management
Enumerate the 3 department
- Personnel Department
- Accounting Department
- Loan Department
Enumerate the 4 Advantages of the data base approach
- No data redundancy
- Single update
- Task data independence
- Improved data integrity
Enumerate the 3 Disadvantage of database approach
- More expensive
- More difficult to recover from a failure
- Because it is so different from the file-oriented approach, the database approach requires training users.
