Retribution
The philosophy that those who commit criminal acts should be punished or breaking society rules to the extent required by just desert (revenge)
Just desert
A sanctioning philosophy, based on the assertion that criminal punishment should be proportionate to the severity of the crime (getting what is deserved)
Deterrence
The strategy of preventing crime through the threat of punishment
Incapacitation
Strategy for preventing crime by detaining wrongdoers in prison there by separating them from the communities and reducing criminal opportunities
Rehabilitation
The philosophy that society is best served went wrong. Tours are provided the resources needed to eliminate criminality for their behavior patterns.
Restorative justice
An approach to punish designed to repair the harm done to the victim and the community by the fenders criminal act
Restitution
Monetary compensation for damages done to the victim by the fenders, criminal act
Intermediate sentencing
Imposition of sentence that prescribes and a range of years rather than a definite period of years to be served
Determinate sentencing
Imposition of a sentence that is fixed, but it’s in Tennessee in authority, and cannot be produced by judges for other corrections officials (maximum capacity)

A reduction in time served by prisoners based on good behavior, conformity to rules and other positive behavior

A situation, in which those convicted of a similar crime do not receive similar sentences
Sentencing discrimination
A situation in which the length of the sentence appears to be influenced by a defendants race, gender, economic status, or other factor, not directly related to the crime he or she committed
Sentencing guideline
Legislative determine guidelines that judges are required to follow when sentencing those convicted of specific crimes
Departure
