Chapter 9/10- Bonding Flashcards
What is a Lewis dot structure?
Shows number of valence electrons
Polar definition
Unequal sharing of electrons
What determines polarity?
Electronegativity, or the ability of an atom to attract towards itself the electrons in a chemical bond
Higher electronegativity= higher tendency to attract electrons
Electronegativity trend
Up and to the right
What are exceptions to the octet rule? (Incomplete)
Be
Has two valence electrons, wants two bonds, or 4 total electrons
B
3 valence electrons, wants three bonds or 6 electrons
Exceptions to octet rule (expanded)?
S
Can have 12 electrons
P
Can have 10 electrons
Xe and Se
Need at least 8 but can have more
What is VSEPR?
Valence shell electron pair repulsion
Accounts for geometric arrangement of electron pairs around a central atom
