Chapter 8.3 Resultant force Flashcards
Wha is the definition of a resultant force?
A resultant force is the single force and associated torque (a force that tends to cause rotation) obtained by combining a system of forces and torques acting on a rigid body.
OR
A force equal to the sum of all forces applied to an object.
What is the definition of an unbalanced force?
Forces that are equal in size but opposite in direction are called balanced forces. Balanced forces do not cause a change in the motion of objects.
What is Newton’s First law of motion?
Newton’s First Law states that an object will remain at rest or in uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an external force.
What is the definition of inertia?
Inertia is the name for the tendency of an object in motion to remain in motion. Or an object at rest to remain at rest unless acted upon by a force.
What happens if the resultant force of an object is zero?
If the resultant force acting on a stationary object is zero, the object will remain stationary. If the resultant force acting on a moving object is zero, the object will carry on moving at the same speed in the same direction
How do you calculate the resultant force?
Use Newton’s second law (F=ma)
Force = Mass X acceleration
