those people who fall into the 10 to 24 year old age range

factor that increases an individual’s ability to avoid risks or hazards, and promotes social and emotional competence to thrive in all aspects of life

Hypertension
systolic pressure equal to or geater than 140 mm of mercury (Hg) and/or diastolic pressure equal to or greater that 90 mmHg for extended periods of time

-2010: over 1/5 of the U.S. population
-2012: ~54% of adolescents were non-Hispanic white. 40% by 2050
-racial and ethnic makeup will become increasingly diverse
Demography: Living Arrangements
-2012: >25% live in single parent families, rises due to divorce. These children experience economic disadvantages as well as emotional cognitive and social development
Demography: Employment Status and Health Care Access
-participation in labor force has remained fairly constant
-disparities by race/ethnicity. Black ad/adults more likely to be unemployed. Whites highest proportion of employment.

Why has there been a decline in mortality?
decline in death rates over past decades due to medicine and injury and disease prevention.
Are male or female mortality higher?
Male mortality is higher. Most threats stem from behavior.
(I believe it is because men tend to take more risks not sure though)
With regard to the health profile of this age group, what four major areas stand out?
-mortality
-morbidity from specific infectious diseases
-health behavior and lifestyle
-protective factors
High school student unintentional injuries are due to….
seat belt use, helmets, riding with drinker, driving while under influence
what is a new challenge regarding unintentional injury of HS students?
texting while driving
Unintentional Injuries of College students are due to
use of alcohol as a contributing factor
-motor vehicle crashes when consuming alcohol, or riding in a care with someone drunk
- swimming and boating after drinking
-not wearing seatbelt
risk factors
individual, familial or environmental influences that will lead an individual toward negative behaviors that put children at risk further risk for negative behaviors especially for drug use and abuse
