Why was the trade a reason for exploration?
Spices and silk were valuable commodities. However,they were really expensive,as the main route to the east west was over land via the Great Silk Road.
This route began increasing dangerous with the growth of the Turkish Empire. The Muslim Turks, were the enemy of the Christians, so they made it more difficult and even more expensive for Europeans to travel trough their land
Why was the religion a reason of exploration?
Almost all Europeans were Christians. Most ships that went voyages of discovery carried at least one priest. His job was not only to look after the sailors, but to spread Christianity to any new people discovered
Why was the empire building a reason for exploration?
Many Europeans countries longed to build empires.They wanted to control new lands , and exploit the natural resources of those. Spain and Portugal began to collect colonies so the rest of Europe wanted to catch up.

Clever mixture of two types of ships.
Had triangular-shaped lateensails, which allowed them to move in and out of small bays and harbours.
Ships built to sail in the much rougher Atlantic were clinker built, which meant they had overlapping planks of wood

An agreement between Spain and Portugal in 1494. They decided to draw a line on a map of the world and agreed that any new land discovered to the east of the line would belong to Portugal and at the west to Spain
