Chapter 8 - Solutions - Concentration and molarity Flashcards
What does concentration mean?
The concentration of a solution is the amount of solute present in a specified amount of solvent or solution.
What are the different ways of expressing concentration?
- Mass of solute/100ml or 1L of solvent or solution
- Volume of solute/100ml or 1L of solvent or solution
- %(w/v) - mass of solute/100mL of solution
- %(v/v) - volume of solute/100ml of solution
- %(w/w) - mass of solute/100g solution
- ppm (parts per million) g of solid or liquid solute/million g of solute
What is a dilute solution?
A solution which contains a relatively low concentration of the solute.
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution which contains a relatively high concentration of solute.
What is molarity?
Molarity of a solution is the number of moles of solute per litre of solution.
How do we calculate molarity?
c=n/V
What is a standard solution?
Solutions in which the concentration is accurately known.
What is the formula used for calculating the volume to which a given solution must be diluted to give a required concentration or the concentration that results from a particular dilution?
C1V1=C2V2
