Chapter 8 - Rotational Kinematics Flashcards
What does a larger moment of inertia mean?
It resists rotational acceleration more so it will take longer than an object with lower moment of inertia
because rotational acceleration is smaller for larger moment or inertia (inversely proportional)
Objects with less rotational inertia roll faster
What is occuring in rolling motion when there is no slipping?
There is static friction that provides the torque needed for wheel to rotate while moving forward
So if the frictionis removed, the object will no longer rotate but slide
What is tangential speed analogous to?
Tangential speed is the circular motion equivalent to linear speed in 1D kinematics.
It converts the angular speed in terms of linear motion
When do you not use the kinematic equations and instead opt for the simpler forms?
When there is constnat velocity since acceleration equals 0
What happens when tangential acceleration is 0
Speed along circular path is constant and the only acceleration present in the circiular motion is centrieptal acceleration
What is the equation for angular displacement?
theta = s/r
s = arc length (m)
Conversion from rev to rad
rev x 2pirad/1rev
Equation for total acceleration
Combines both centrieptal and tangential
a = sqrt(ac^2 + at^2)
