Chapter 8 Part 2 Flashcards
What is a cumulative pollutant?
Pollutant that persists in the environment for long time periods
Example: DDT
What is a global pollutant?
A pollutant that causes global impacts.
Example: Nitrogen dioxide
What is a flow pollutant?
Pollutant that has a short-term impact and then dissipate or absorbed harmlessly into the environment.
Example: Methane
How are local pollutants regulated?
Through emissions standards and/or technology-based approaches
How are regional pollutants regulated?
Through policies such as technology-based approaches and/or emissions standards
How are global pollutants regulated?
Through pollution taxes and tradable permits
What is the difference between point-source pollution and nonpoint-source pollution?
Point-Source: Pollution that is emitted from an identifiable source.
Non-Point Source: Pollution that is difficult to identify as originating from a particular source.
What is an example of a point-source pollutant?
Factories , sewage treatment plants
What is an example of a non-point source pollutant?
Groundwater contamination from agricultural runoff
Which pollution control policies are market-based?
Pigouvian/Pollution Taxes
Tradable Pollution Permits
Which pollution control policies are non-market based?
Emission standards
Technology-based Approaches
